Copilot, explained simply
Microsoft Copilot is the assistant in the Copilot app and, on paid work plans, inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
What it is best at
Writing in Office apps
The business plans list Copilot in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
Chat
Microsoft says Copilot Chat is included at no extra cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans.
Work data
A Copilot licence adds chat connected to work data. A paste-only recipe does not need that.
Who uses it
The page we checked is for organisations. It does not describe a consumer breakdown. People also use the Copilot chat in a browser.
Key features
Copilot Chat
Available at no additional cost with eligible Microsoft 365 plans, including Copilot in Outlook and the Copilot app, on Microsoft's business pricing page.
Office apps
Business Premium and Business Standard with Copilot include the desktop and web apps plus Copilot in those apps.
Agents
A Copilot licence adds pre-built agents such as Researcher and Analyst. That is a work plan, not the free chat.
Sign-in
Work features ask for a work account. The consumer chat is a separate sign-in at copilot.microsoft.com.
How to sign up
- 1
For a chat, open https://copilot.microsoft.com and sign in with a Microsoft account.

2 minRecipes that use Copilot
List subscriptions worth a decision
Each line is marked keep, cancel, or ask, using only the note you added.
Explain a budget tab to the owner
A note cites the cells you named and does not add a story.
Organise your email and unsubscribe from spam
Tidy Gmail with an assistant that can open it, or sort a pasted list when the chat cannot.
Turn a messy note into a to-do list
One brain dump becomes a short list with a first step on each line.
Draft a polite reply you have not sent
A reply sits in a note until you decide to send it yourself.

A list of what is on your mind becomes a week with a few blocks, not a packed timetable.
