Looking things up
Plus includes Deep Research where it is available. Free has limited deep research, on the pricing page.
Files
Plus includes file uploads and analysis. Free is limited to fewer uploads.
Who uses it
OpenAI describes Free as trying ChatGPT out, Plus as advanced work and productivity, and Pro as research and coding. They do not publish a list of job types.

Free includes text chats. The pricing page says everyday text chats are unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails.
Voice and images
Plus adds voice conversations and image generation. Pro lists unlimited and faster image creation.
Projects and tasks
Plus includes projects, scheduled tasks, and custom GPTs.
Apps
The pricing page lists plugins on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro. A connector that can read your mail is a separate choice. Leave it off unless a recipe tells you to turn it on.
